LEGACY IN STONE: The Creation of Charter Oak Cultural Center’s Home with Ira Smith Recorded Thursday, January 29 at 6:30pm via Zoom Throughout 2026, Charter Oak Cultural Center will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of our historic building. This presentation examines the history and design of Temple Beth Israel, the first synagogue built in Connecticut (1876) and now the proud home of Charter Oak Cultural Center. The synagogue was created at a time when Jewish communities expressed identity and aspiration through architecture. Drawing on far-ranging styles such as Moorish Revival, Romanesque, and Neo-Classical design, the design of Temple Beth Israel reflects both deep religious tradition and engagement with the modern world. By exploring its architectural features, historical context, and communal role, the presentation highlights how Temple Beth Israel functioned not only as a place of worship, but also as a cultural and social landmark within Hartford.
