1/2 Satin Flycatchers Myiagra cyanoleuca nest building in Victoria on 3 December 2025, Part 1

Male arrived at nest in dead branch of Messmate Eucalyptus obliqua first, perched in nest, calling and fanning tail and rubbing bill around edge.. Female arrived with piece of fibre, male departed. Female perched in nest and wove in fibre, picked at edges and fanned tail, calling, for one minute. Male returned with fibre or spiderweb, but departed again. Then repeated same again 30 seconds later. Female remained on nest for 1.5 minutes, building, then flew off. Location is Staughton Vale, adjacent to the Brisbane Ranges National Park north of Geelong. Woodland is on a slope, dry, open, mostly Yellow Gums, Messmate, Red Box with understory of Cassinia, Golden Wattle and Dianella. Forest was burnt in 2006 bushfires, but most of the trees around the nest site survived.
