Just call him “walk away with pay-Rod.” Ending weeks of speculation over what would become his end game to his tumultuous tenure in the Bronx, Alex Rodriguez announced at another tearful press conference on Sunday morning that he will retire as a player effective on Friday – although, as he indicated, the Yankees clearly helped nudge him out the door. The Bombers’ three nights in Boston this week and then Friday at the Stadium against Tampa Bay will mark the final games of A-Rod’s playing career. He then will be unconditionally released from his contract before signing a new deal to serve as a special advisor to owner Hal Steinbrenner and an organizational mentor to young players for the 2017 season, with the final year of his contract being paid in full.
