We begin our second European road trip of 2025 by crossing the Channel from Dover to Calais on what was rather a bleak June morning. As we drove south, towards our first overnight stop in St Quentin, we stopped at two major WWI memorials to those who fell in battle. First we visited Notre Dame de Lorette. On this elevated site reside the remains of more than 40,000 solders are interred here. The adjacent Ring of Remembrance remembers the more than half a million combatants who died during the battles in this part of France alone. It is the largest French military cemetery. A short drive away is Vimy Ridge, a National Historic site of Canada. It was the location of a great Canadian Vctory in 1917. Today on this stunning memorial are carved the names of some 11285 Canadians who where missing in France. The site was given to Canada in perpetuity for use as a memorial. On Day Two we make a stop in the fortress city of Sedan. This place was so strongly fortified that it became the base for the French Emperor, Napoleon III, during the Franco Prussian war. It proved his undoing though as he was soon captured as the fortress fell and he was forced to abdicate. We visit the Chateaux Fort and inside we find recreated rooms from different eras and also audio visual displays featuring tales from the past that illuminate the myths that surround it. We really enjoyed the stories of the sword called Flamberge. Onwards then to the Eifel region of Germany and a three night stay in a wonderfully well equipped apartment in the small village of Steffeln. A lovely place from which to explore. #france #europe #germany #roadtrip #stquentin #dover#calais #englishchannel #notredamedelorette #ww1 #cemetary #ossuary #ringofremembrance #vimyridge #canada #canadiannationalhistoricsite #history #sedan #chateaufortdesedan #flamberge #medievalmyths #eifel #steffeln
