Though e-cigarettes containing nicotine are banned in Australia, their use is growing, and users often import vape liquids from the US. Three years ago, just over 1 per cent of Australian adults said they used electronic cigarettes, and that figure has probably gone up significantly since then, particularly among young people. The Australian National Drug Strategy Household Survey reported that 6.4 per cent of young smokers aged 18-24 used e-cigarettes. There is unanimous opposition to vaping among the peak Australian health groups, while the tobacco industry and other vaping supporters are pushing for the regulations to be loosened, arguing vaping makes it easier for people to quit cigarettes. But critics say vaping could also be doing the opposite; encouraging non-smokers to take up smoking and, from there, serve as a gateway to cigarettes.
