Published in 2012, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) Study 2010 is arguably the most comprehensive assessment of human health to date. Coordinated by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, study collaborators compiled and analyzed all available data on health outcomes from census and vital registration to survey, research, and administrative data for 187 countries for 1990, 2005, and 2010. The study results provide a granular quantitative view of the world's burden of disease due to premature mortality and morbidity and allows benchmarking across countries and over time. To make the results more accessible and useful for broad audiences, custom visualization tools were designed to help explore all dimensions of the data. This presentation covers the objectives of the study and how the data were obtained, cleaned, and analyzed, and explores the results with demos of the visualization tools.
