March 4, 2023 Parsons was founded in 1870 and incorporated by the railroad. Driving through Parsons, KS on Main Street through historic downtown. There are a lot of closed businesses on the main street. We drove past a closed Save A Lot grocery store, an old closed Walmart, a few closed restaurants, a closed Burger King restaurant and a few closed gas stations. I talked to some local people at a gas station in town and they said a lot of the businesses closed for good during/after the pandemic. I haven't researched the why of the closed businesses any further than that. Parsons is still a beautiful historic city with lots of history and beautiful old buildings and homes. The location for the town was chosen because it was where the two branches of the railroad being built from Junction City, Kansas and Sedalia, Missouri would meet, and was on a ridge between Labette Creek and Little Labette Creek, which were soon dammed to provide a water source.
