Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has announced five members of the Iranian women’s football team have been given asylum in Australia, after fears for their safety if they were to return home. According to the Department of Home Affairs, the women are midfielders Fatemeh Pasandideh, Zahra Sarbali Alishah, Mona Hamoudi and team captain Zahra Ghanbari, as well as defender Atefeh Ramezanizadeh. Burke said the women were happy to have their names and faces reported. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese added that the opportunity was open to other members of the team as well. The Iranian team played South Korea in the AFC Asian Women's Championship on the Gold Coast when they were seen not singing the national anthem. The game took place days after Israel and the US began airstrikes on Iran. Many saw the move as a silent protest — one Iranian state television presenter labelled the team “wartime traitors”.
