I threw a dart at the world map blindfolded… and it landed on Kazakhstan 🇰🇿. From the Charyn Canyon and Shymbulak to trying the nomadic lifestyle by leaving in a yurt, eating horse meat and a lamb's head, this Kazakhstan adventure was worth every penny. I had no idea what was waiting for me on the other side of the planet. In Episode 1 of this 3-part Kazakhstan adventure, I land in Almaty, a city of surprises, and take off into a week that’s anything but predictable: ✅ Explore Charyn Canyon – Central Asia’s Grand Canyon, a geological wonder that almost nobody outside Kazakhstan talks about. Often called the "Grand Canyon of Central Asia," Charyn is a breathtaking natural wonder in southeastern Kazakhstan, about 200 kilometers from Almaty. Carved over millions of years by the Charyn River, the canyon stretches for 154 kilometers and features dramatic red rock formations, steep cliffs, and labyrinthine valleys. One of its most famous sections, the Valley of Castles, showcases towering sandstone structures that resemble ancient fortresses. Rich in geological and ecological significance, Charyn Canyon is part of the Charyn National Park and offers a glimpse into the region’s prehistoric past while serving as a popular destination for hikers, photographers, and nature lovers. ✅ Dine at Sandyq in Almaty – one of the world’s most unique luxury restaurants, where I tried horse stew and horse milk (known as kumis or kymyz). ✅ Visit Shymbulak – Kazakhstan’s premier ski resort ✅ Experience traditional Kazakh hospitality at Auyl Restaurant where I tried the famous Beshbarmak, the national dish - also known as besparmak. It translates to "five fingers" and is traditionally eaten with the hands. The dish typically consists of boiled meat (often horse, lamb, or beef) served over wide, flat noodles, and is accompanied by a flavorful onion broth. ✅ Sit down for a once-in-a-lifetime family dinner where I was served a lamb’s head ✅ Meet with the country’s top tourism leaders: Kairat Sadvakassov, Chairman – Kazakh Tourism National Company Yerzhan Yerkinbayev, Vice Minister of Tourism and Sports Shyryn Mussina, Director – Kazakh Tourism Kamila Lukpanova, CEO – Almaty Tourism This is the start of a wild journey through a country full of history, landscapes, and traditions I never imagined. 🎯 This is Travel by Dart.
