After travelling all over the countryside, adventurer and filmmaker Mal Leyland is back to share his private health battle with Australian Story. At 81, he's living with moderate stage dementia, supported by his daughter Carmen and her family. But for the TV legend, the travel bug is still alive. The co-star of the 1970s and '80s show Ask the Leyland Brothers is preparing for his final outback trip. He will host a convoy of four-wheel-drive enthusiasts on a journey from the west to east coasts of Australia to commemorate the 60th anniversary the Leylands' groundbreaking continental crossing. In this Australian Story, we look back at the incredible highs and lows of Mal's life and his legacy as a filmmaker, traveller and all-around TV icon.
