Originally composed for sci-fi film ‘Under the Skin’ (directed by Jonathan Glazer), this extraordinary piece somehow balances a haunting sense of menace with allure. Perhaps it’s Mica Levi’s own unusual musical journey, from classical training to DJing and making their name in Micachu and the Shapes that lends the whole score such a compelling alien feel. Or perhaps it’s the pitch-bends and discordant moments: “A lot of it is microtonal. Instead of the 12 tones we’re used to, it’s wavering in between them, and using the clashes that they create – which can sound out of tune, but can be more expressive because it’s not precise and accurate. To me it sounds comforting. It’s meant to sound uncomfortable, but I find something quite human about it.” – Mica Levi Whatever it is, it’s exquisite.
