Before joining forces with David Bowie, Mick Ronson cut his teeth with The Rats, a Hull-based band that played raw and powerful blues-rock. If you search YouTube you will find a few of their recordings, including the excellent 'Telephone Blues'. I am sure you will have seen the promotional video for 'Life on Mars', shot backstage at Earl's Court on 12th May, 1973 to promote the single. Filmed and directed by Mick Rock it features David, alone. At the point of the guitar solo, he closes his eyes and tilts his head back, as if transported by to another level. And well he might, because Mick's solo is a work of pure genius and integral to the song. While setting to work figuring it out, I soon heard that it was double-tracked and consisted of two near-identical guitar parts. The only differences are that the second guitar, the one right down in the mix, plays a different note for those two majestic bends and also a different note between them. Furthermore, whilst a casual listen picks up that very smooth vibrato on the bends, on more detailed attention we can hear that it is the second guitar, only. The main guitar just bends the notes and lets them hang. For playing live, I would recommend playing the main guitar part, but adding vibrato to those bends. A variety of blues and blues-rock techniques were employed for this solo, including string bends, vibrato and a rake. Mick Ronson was an outstanding and influential player and his solo on 'Life on Mars' is very fine, indeed. I hope you enjoy this lesson and find it of use. Even if you do not intend playing it as part of a performance with a band, it is an excellent solo for working on some of the crucial blues-guitar techniques. Good luck with your playing!
