Eye patch application and putting glasses on a toddler. In this video you’ll hear two original songs written by Gus’ mom, Carrie Groleau, a contributing writer for The Children’s Eye Foundation blog. She also documents her son’s vision journey and provides patching parent support on Instagram @patchwithgus. Consistency with a daily routine is such an important part of patching and getting a young child to keep his glasses on. These daily songs help prepare Gus for patch-time and teach him the reason why he patches and wears glasses in a way that is easy for a young child to understand. Gus has been wearing an eye patch over his stronger, dominant eye to strengthen the vision in his left eye since he was 5.5 months old. He is 21 months old in this video. Gus was born blind in his left eye due to persistent fetal vasculature, a dense congenital cataract, a tiny fixed/non-dilating pupil, and unilateral microphthalmia. He has severe amblyopia, strabismus, and at the age of one, he developed secondary glaucoma. Thanks to multiple eye surgeries, vision correction (through aphakic contact lenses and now through a lens implant and glasses), and daily patch therapy, Gus now has vision in both eyes!
