I'm not sure, but I do think there could be some issues with it. Lets look at the current system first. Your stuff breaks if you use it too much. At least your tools, your weapons and armour break after dying enough times with it. I'm also assuming you'll be able to repair items with the material their made out of. This system is interesting and definitely has a bit more thought put into it than copying Minecraft but I think it could have some more consideration. Also before I get into it properly, I'm going to try to get a Hytale creator code soon and if you like and subscribe I think it would really help. Anyway Let's look at the advantages of a system like this first It creates a constant need for more resources, meaning you have to interact with game systems multiple times. Instead of just going mining once, you go mining every time you need materials to replace or repair your gear. The positive of this is that it gives you more playtime out of the same mechanics and can help diversify gameplay by breaking up your main goals with the side quests of repairing gear. This can also be seen as a negative, but I'll talk about that later. Another advantage of this system is that it can be used to balance items. There can be stronger items with less durability, or the opposite. I don't really like this way of balancing items personally since being stronger is just more annoying, not more difficult or complex, but it's always an option. This system also adds extra strategy to the game in some situations. Think about Minecraft, when you're mining and your iron pickaxe is about to break, so you use a stone one until you find diamonds so you can use the iron one to mine the diamonds. This system also makes death more threatening and punishing, which can be good, especially since they didn't want to go with Minecraft's death approach, which I think was the right choice. The only other benefit I can think of is that it's more realistic, but realism should never be prioritised over gameplay. If you want realism, go outside. Now for the cons of this system. Constantly having to get new materials can get tedious fast, and its hard to strike a balance between giving the player enough materials where they can repair their gear when needed and not too much where they never run out and durability only serves to make the player check into their base every now and then to repair gear. Another downside is that it discourages using interesting or fun items because they have limited durability, making the game more boring since the player's just going to use what's easy to make. This also makes getting new gear feel less rewarding since it can just become unusable after a while. I'm not sure if items will vanish when they run out of durability or just become unusable until repaired, but I'd be surprised if it was the first option. The other downside is that death can be pretty frustrating, and it makes difficult bosses or dungeons annoying since with the current 10% durability loss on death you need to repair your gear every 10 attempts, 9 if the gear fully gets destroyed on death. This wouldn't be an issue on release, but if the developers ever want to add actually difficult content that takes more than a few attempts, they'd need to think about it. Now a lot of people would say to just remove durability, and I like not having durability but I don't think it's necessarily the best solution, since it takes away the cons and the pros of the current system. Instead, what if we just addressed every con of the current system. First of all, the tedium of constantly getting gear. Easy solution, when automation is added, make sure you can automate the materials to repair any gear the player can get. No exceptions. Oh, also you should be able to automate almost all, if not all consumables too. This way you can still grind it manually, but if you want to avoid the tedium, you can automate it. It would take longer in the short term, but it would be a better long term solution. This would also be good since it adds another reason to automate, otherwise it would just be for building materials or something. I'm pretty confident this will already be implemented though, so something that's actually a new idea is automatically repairing the player's gear while their in their base, or in a certain machine, or just something more convenient than manually doing it at a workstation. Kinda like how logistics robots in Factorio automatically repair your vehicles and yes I'm referencing Factorio again it's a really good game
