After Hess was removed from office due to his mysterious flight to Scotland, Bormann succeeded in distancing himself from him and even became his successor as Hitler's private secretary. During the war, Bormann became the dictator's closest confidant and eventually reached a position in which he decided on everything and everyone that was to reach Hitler. During the Nazi regime, he remained unknown to most Germans, but Bormann was the powerful string-puller of the »Third Reich«.
