The bike industry isn’t what it used to be. In this video, I break down how patent expirations, margin erosion, post-COVID economics, and runaway prices have reshaped the entire landscape. Back in 2014, major suspension patents like FSR, DW-Link, and VPP were all set to expire— opening the door for direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands to use the same tech as big-name manufacturers. Combine that with tariffs, inflation, and rising property values, and local bike shops were suddenly squeezed from every direction. I started my business, Swift Fix Mobile Bike Shop, in 2017 because I saw this shift coming — a chance to build a shop based solely on service and trust, not overpriced inventory. Today, the industry faces a crossroads: • Go nonprofit/community-driven, • Stay service-focused, or • Chase the “Rolex-fication” of cycling — selling $22K S-Works Levos as status symbols instead of tools for riding. This video breaks it all down from someone who lives it every day. #BikeIndustry #BikeShops #SwiftFix #eMTB #MountainBike #BicycleBusiness #CyclingIndustry #D2C #Patents #BikeLifeWithSwiftFix
