Martin Page's and Robbie Williams' Demo of 'The Big Goodbye' (Cut by Ronan Keating as a duet with Robbie, on his Twenty/Twenty album) I remember taking a rough home demo track up to Robbie Williams’ house in Los Angeles. We’d become friends playing football at his home playing field, and kicking a ball around in the San Fernando Valley. Playing soccer together was our acquaintance. Robbie had found out about my songwriting history and by hook or crook we’d become close. This track that I took up to him had balls - fire - but also emotion. When Robbie asked me to write with him, I prepared a lot of ideas, as was my way. This concept seemed the strongest, so I shopped this vibe to Robbie with vigor. We’d been writing together for a while, jamming, checking each other out, and this rough demo of mine triggered enthusiasm in Robbie - he jumped on to writing the lyrics to my music and melodies. What was fantastic about Robbie was how he studied the phonetic vocals I sang on my demo, how he emulated my guide demo vocal. He was a master at catching the nuances. Even though I scatted and sang free-form a great deal, he wanted to totally capture the essence of my lead vocal. He was determined to get ‘my’ spirit of the song. I’ve always believed Rob to be an excellent lyricist ... I told him so on many occasions - to trust his instinct. He is the king of slight of hand, of cheeky sophistication, of irony. So that was our job: ME music, ROB lyrics concept - beautiful. Luckily my very talented mate, Bobby Summerfield (who I also kicked a ball around with), agreed to produce the finished song with me at his top-of-the-line pro home studio in Sherman Oaks. We transferred my home demo to Bobby’s studio, and Robbie came over to Bobby’s to sing the finished item. Now - Bobby is top notch in every way - the toppermost best... and together, he and I produced this demo. Robbie had written some sublime personal lyrics... sometimes texting them to me as he wrote them. When he sang them at Bobby’s .... I knew something special was going on. A few years on .... Ronan Keating discovers the song via Robbie. Robbie’s lyrics had come home... and Ronan records the song as a duet with Robbie on his “Twenty/Twenty“ - 2020 solo album. Rob’s words for the late Boyzone member, Stephen Gately, are finally allowed to breathe.... Here then is the the demo that I recorded with Robbie Williams. The original demo - (the music) was initially started at my home studio. I played and programmed all of the instruments, and sang guide vocal melodies and background vocals. Then I transferred my demo to Bobby Summerfield’s studio so we could record Robbie’s lead and backing vocals there. Then those tracks were sent back to my home studio - where (after adding my electric guitar solo lines) I finally mixed the finished demo you now hear. The demo is produced by myself and Bobby Summerfield. Special Friendship and Teamwork! Martin Martin Page on Facebook: / martinpagemusic Instagram: / martinpagemusic Twitter: / martinpagemusic
