(23 Nov 1996) Cant/Eng/Nat The British Garrison in Hong Kong has been holding its last annual "Open Day" before the colony reverts to Chinese rule next year. This year's event is the largest ever, featuring action displays by the Royal Air Force, the Royal Navy and the Army. All British troops will be pulling out of the territory by next July. Thousands of people gathered at Hong Kong's British Garrison to take part in the final 'Open Day' on Stonecutter's Island. The Garrison, a restricted area, is only open to the public once a year. This year was the last 'Open Day' of its kind -- next year, the colony will be handed over to China. Helicopters, naval ships and assault crafts were on display -- allowing visitors a rare glimpse behind the scenes and the perfect chance for a photograph. For just 1.50 U-S dollars, visitors could pose with the soldiers -- all proceed going to charity. The final Garrison Open day helped raise funds for the Locally Enlisted Personnel Trust. The charity was established by the British Forces to provide funds for Hong Kong Chinese ex-members of the Garrison, who may need assistance after the handover. Highlight of the day -- action displays by the soldiers. The traditional dragon and lion dances kicked off the start of the action sequences. This was the crowd pleaser -- the 'Anti Terrorist Tactical Display', which featured a hostage situation. SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese) "It's like a movie, I've never seen anything like it. It's very neat." SUPER CAPTION: Spectator SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese) "I'm very happy (mother: was is exciting?) Yes, it was very exciting." SUPER CAPTION: Young Spectator Also featured were the motorcycle sequences, including riding through burning bales of straw and extraordinary tests of balance. But it wasn't all plain sailing - this motorcyclist took a spill. For those preparing to leave the territory it was also a special event. SOUNDBITE: 'It's a shame really. It is quite a nice country, Hong Kong and that. But can't do anything about it." SUPER CAPTION: Private Bentley, British soldier Most of the soldiers stationed in Hong Kong will return to the United Kingdom after the handover next year.
