We're defending the airport from the movement, coming into Baghdad, and basically we're searching and attacking up the road. The best defence, the best offence and we are continuing combat operations." 18. Low shot of soldier in foreground, thick black smoke rising in background 19. Wide shot soldiers standing around tank, clouds of smoke STORYLINE: U.S. soldiers with the 3rd Infantry Division fought with Saddam Hussein's elite Republican Guards on Saturday in suburbs southwest of Baghdad. Members of the U.S. infantry moved towards the Republican Guard barracks from Baghdad's international airport - and were met with resistance from small ammunition arms and snipers. The barracks lie between the airport and the centre of the Iraqi capital. Lt. Col. Scott Rutter, Battalion Commander of the U.S. Army said the aim of the operation was to move closer to the capital, so the coalition can "facilitate future, and possibly onward operations" from there. He said: "We're defending the airport from the movement, coming into Baghdad, and basically we're searching and attacking up the road."
