Exploring Cockington Court: Artisans, Gardens, and Heritage

Cockington Village, near Torquay in Devon, has a rural atmosphere and is quintessentially English, with thatched cottages and old-world charm. When we were looking at places to live in Devon, it was on our list. Today we are visiting Cockington Court, a historic manor house nestled in the heart of the village. Dating back to the 16th century, this magnificent estate has a rich history. Originally a manor for prominent families, it now serves as a vibrant arts and crafts centre. It is set in lush, picturesque gardens, and offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore both the gardens, its historical roots and its creative side. The house is a Grade II listed building and has preserved much of its traditional charm. The estate's expansive grounds include beautiful rose gardens, lakes, and woodlands, making it a haven for nature lovers. The parklands are ideal for leisurely walks, picnics, and enjoying the peace and tranquility. Cockington Court also has two creative areas which are home to a variety of artisan studios where local craftspeople work and sell their handmade goods. Visitors can observe glassblowers, jewellers, sculptors and blacksmiths at work, and purchase unique pieces of art directly from the creators. There is a tearoom, where we pause for lunch, a delightful shop and an art exhibition. On the estate is a church dating back to the doomsday book. It has a very interesting interior partly due to a number of additions over the years including gothic arches and windows. So join us as we visit this must-visit destination in Devon, offering a harmonious blend of history, art, and nature. Whether you're exploring the historic manor, strolling through the gardens, or admiring the work of talented local artisans, there is something for everyone to enjoy and the visit was entirely free, mind out as we ended up buying quite a bit.
