In this journey across Cape Breton Island, we trade our hiking boots for paddles to explore the most unique segment of the Trans Canada Trail: The Bras d’Or Lake Water Route. Known as Pitu’paq to the Mi’kmaq, this 377km "inland sea" is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that defies definition. From the historic engineering of the St. Peter’s Canal National Historic Site—which physically lifts you from the Atlantic into the lake—to the sailing hub of Baddeck and the Mi’kmaq heartland of Eskasoni, this is a paddler’s paradise. Follow us as we navigate the same waters where Alexander Graham Bell tested his world-changing inventions. We’ll explore the white steeples of Iona, the heights of Beinn Bhreagh, and the hidden geocaches of Ben Eoin. Whether you are a kayaker, canoeist, or adventure seeker, this "Great Trail" water route offers a perspective of Nova Scotia you simply cannot see from the highway. Next up: We head back to the Highlands for the Celtic Shores Coastal Trail! This video is part of an ongoing series exploring different sections of the Trans Canada Trail, the world’s longest multi-use trail network. In this series, I document walking, hiking, and trail conditions across Canada, highlighting access points, landscapes, communities, and what it’s actually like to experience each section on foot. These videos are intended for hikers, walkers, outdoor explorers, and anyone interested in long-distance trails, active transportation, and slow travel in Canada.
