Pastor Luke Higgs Sunday Evening Service, February 8, 2026 Text: Philippians 4:8 Series: Christ My Life (Philippians) Missionary Bible Church Halifax, Nova Scotia http://www.mbchalifax.com/ Sermon Notes: This sermon, titled "Oh Be Careful, Little Mind, What You Think," (0:00) focuses on Philippians 4:8, which exhorts believers to control their thoughts. Pastor Luke emphasizes the importance of intentional thinking, highlighting that individuals are responsible for what occupies their minds (3:28). The Startling Revelation (3:37): The sermon introduces the concept that individuals are in control of their thoughts and should actively manage them. It challenges the common tendency to ignore or let thoughts run wild, drawing parallels to the character "Ignorant" from Pilgrim's Progress who "take[s] no notice of [his] thoughts" (3:54). The Sweeping Responsibility (8:32): Believers have a responsibility to filter their thoughts through six criteria from Philippians 4:8: True (9:37): Thoughts should be based on truth, not worries about hypothetical events. Pastor Luke emphasizes focusing on Jesus, "the way, the truth, and the life," and His word (10:35). Honest/Honourable (12:15): Thoughts should be respectable and not crude or coarse, distinguishing Christian thought from the content often found in popular media (12:43). Just/Righteous (13:26): Christians should avoid dwelling on sin, focusing instead on righteous actions and Christ-like behaviour (13:33). Pure (14:04): Thoughts should be clean and holy, rejecting the impure jokes and innuendos prevalent in entertainment (14:17). Lovely/Pleasant (15:21): Thoughts should be pleasant, like good memories or songs, rather than malice or hurtful intentions (15:30). Of Good Report (16:07): Thoughts should be about things that are well-spoken of, avoiding gossip or tearing down others' reputations (16:10). The Sweet Results (21:45): Actively managing thoughts leads to positive outcomes: Affects Character (22:01): What one thinks directly influences who they become, as "as he thinketh in his heart, so is he" (22:10). Affects Conduct (24:54): Thoughts are precursors to actions; right thinking leads to right conduct (25:08). Affects Communion (29:07): Guarding thoughts fosters closer communion with God, bringing the "God of peace" into one's life, and improves relationships with others by focusing on their good qualities (29:42). Tonight's message concludes by reiterating that the ultimate secret to a positive thought life is to think of Christ (36:06), meditating on His person, work, and word, as unworthy thoughts perish in His presence (37:07).
