In 1726, Dorothy Walpole was imprisoned in her own room at Raynham Hall by her jealous husband Lord Charles Townshend until she died, possibly from smallpox or possibly from his violence—the truth died with her. On September 19, 1936, two photographers from Country Life magazine were setting up equipment when they saw a brown-robed figure descending the grand staircase, and in the seconds before she vanished, they captured the most famous ghost photograph in history: the Brown Lady of Raynham, her face clearly visible, her form translucent. Kodak examined the negative and found no evidence of tampering, and 88 years later, skeptics and believers still debate the photo that started modern ghost hunting. Note: We Use Public Domain Photos.
