The Southern Movement used the day to call for independence from the north of the country. STORYLINE: Hundreds of Yemenis crowd the streets of Aden. They wave flags to celebrate the 48th anniversary of the independence of South Yemen. It marks the day British forces withdrew from the city after more than 100 years of British colonial rule. "This is the 48th anniversary of the first independence of South Yemen on November 30 of 1967. We also took to the streets for the second independence of the southern Arab capital, Aden. Aden is free from the Houthi and Afashi invasion," says Ahmed Bamalem, Deputy Head of the Southern Independence Authority. Yemen was unified in May 1990. In 1994 northern forces and southern separatists fought a civil war which was ultimately won by the northerners. The region's Southern Movement group still seeks independence from the north of the country and are using today to highlight their aims. "People of the south have taken to the streets to prove their dedication to freedom and independence and get rid of the unity which ended on July 7 1994 by the barbaric occupation from the Arab Republic of Yemen," says Mohamed Salem Farag, an activist in the Southern Movement. The movement considers southern Yemen to be under occupation by the central government in Sanaa. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
