Hickory Horned Devil Sheds its Skin at The Caterpillar Lab Every summer The Caterpillar Lab is taken over by Devils. The Hickory Horned Devil, Regal, or Royal Walnut Caterpillar, Citheronia regalis, is the largest caterpillar in the United States, and one of the longest caterpillars anywhere in the world. With sweeping red and black horns, dark false eye spots, and an "I'm big and scary" attitude they are one charismatic caterpillar! The "fresh" pink individual in the video will gradually turn bright green, black and red in the days after shedding and grow to the size of a hot dog. Devils play an important role at our outreach programs, both because they are a wonderful species to use in close-up, hands-on interactions, and because they have a troubled history here in the Northeast. Devils lived across much of southern New England, perhaps even up as far north as Maine, but they suffered a steep decline over the last century and were extirpated here by the 1980's. It is valuable for us to tell their stories and remind people that even insects may decline, become rare, and disappear forever if we do not consider their needs as we alter the environment around us.
