Ruby is a gem that exhibits identical properties to those of Sapphire, with the only difference being small amounts of impurities that give Ruby its red colouration. This is in contrast to Sapphire’s well-known blue colour, as well as its colourless, black or grey form. As traditional cardinal gems, both materials are considered to be precious stones. Both Sapphire and Ruby offer good chemical and wear resistance, hardness, thermal conductivity and volume resistivity. Thanks to these impressive qualities, both Sapphire and Ruby are used in a variety of industries. Besides the well-known use of both natural and synthetic Sapphires and Rubies in jewellery and decoration, the synthetic compounds are frequently used in vital components for manufacturing and in labware. This includes the fabrication of semiconductors or as the base material for windows in high-pressure and vacuum applications. Sapphire and Ruby are available in a wide range of forms, including monofilament, rods, bars, sheets, spheres and powder.
