The internal iliac artery and vein lie anterior to the ilium, and may be damaged by a trocar perforating the ilium. The following structures pass through the superior portion of the greater sciatic foramen, where they may be susceptible to damage by a biopsy needle directed too far inferiorly: superior gluteal artery, superior gluteal vein, and sacral plexus.
