Philip Levin, Founder of Live Near Friends, Kristen Berman, CEO and Co-Founder of Irrational Labs, Ben Bartlett, Berkeley City Councilmember and Partner at Tackett Bartlett LLP, and Peter Hirshberg, CEO of Lighthouse.one, come together at Human+Tech Week to explore what it means to live your ideas—not just design them. Drawing from experiments in intentional community, behavioral economics, urban development, and supportive housing, the panel examines how proximity, environment, and systems design shape happiness, health, and human flourishing. From co-living and car-free neighborhoods to biometric-enabled supportive housing, this conversation looks at how experimental models can scale into real-world solutions for cities, wellbeing, and connection. About the speakers Philip Levin is a founder, writer, and urban innovator focused on designing lives of deeper connection. As Founder of Live Near Friends, he builds tools that help people live closer to those they care about—one of the strongest drivers of happiness and wellbeing. Philip also co-edits Supernuclear, a leading resource for intentional community builders, informed by his experience co-founding Bay Area coliving communities including Radish, Cloudside, and RGB. Previously, he helped launch Culdesac, a $170M car-free neighborhood in Tempe, Arizona, and led international connectivity initiatives at Meta through Internet.org. His work consistently centers human flourishing through place, proximity, and purpose. Kristen Berman is a behavioral scientist and entrepreneur who applies behavioral economics to design products and environments that improve real human outcomes. As CEO and Co-Founder of Irrational Labs, which she launched with Dan Ariely, Kristen has helped companies like Google, Lyft, One Medical, and Discover design behaviorally informed products that drive healthier, happier choices. She also co-founded Common Cents Lab at Duke University, leading dozens of large-scale experiments to improve financial wellbeing. Her work bridges academic insight and everyday life, translating behavioral science into practical tools for happiness, decision-making, and social connection. Ben Bartlett is a Berkeley City Councilmember, attorney, and fifth-generation Berkeley native known for advancing bold, equity-driven approaches to housing, health, and urban systems. As a Partner at Tackett Bartlett LLP, he combines policy, law, and innovation to tackle some of the city’s most entrenched challenges. Bartlett has authored over 100 progressive policies, including pioneering legislation to fund prefabricated supportive housing for unhoused residents. His work integrates technology, healthcare, and community-centered design to reimagine supportive services, mental health infrastructure, and inclusive urban development. Peter Hirshberg is an innovation leader and advisor working at the intersection of cities, technology, and culture. As CEO of Lighthouse.one, he supports organizations and governments experimenting with new models of collaboration, creativity, and civic engagement. Peter is the founder of the Maker City Project and Gray Area Foundation for the Arts, and has served as an advisor to companies including Ford Motor Company, Adobe, and Estée Lauder. With a background spanning Apple, urban innovation, and creative economies, he brings a systems-level lens to how experimentation can drive collective progress. #HumanTechWeek #ExperimentalCommunities #UrbanInnovation
