It’s not as straightforward as you may think to get an aggressive metal bass tone. Very often a great bass tone in isolation doesn’t gel well with other instruments. When I need an aggressive bass tone I often split the bass. When you create a normal distorted bass tone, the more distortion you use, the messier the low end tends to sound. This method is fairly common now for getting a great metal bass tone. In this axe fx bass tone tutorial I’m creating quite an extreme example, where there’s a lot of grit, which makes it blend well with heavily distorted guitars. In some ways I’m almost envisaging a distorted bass sound effect like what you might create in a dubstep setting, where it’s less like a traditional bass guitar and more like a screeching guitar. In this video I’m using my Dingwall Ng2 bass straight into the axe fx. This bass is pretty much THE metal bass nowadays, for good reason, but you can get a similar effect with any bass really.
