In this ride-with-me training video, I demonstrate how to build true connection with your horse without pulling on the reins or constantly adjusting your hands. One of the most common mistakes riders make when trying to put their horse “on the bit” is letting go of the contact every time the horse tries to find it. When the rider throws the reins away completely, the horse loses the boundary and cannot develop a steady, elastic connection. In this video I walk through the exact concepts and exercises I use while riding my own competition horse to help develop honest contact and self-carriage. You’ll see how I focus on: • Maintaining a consistent rein connection • Softening through the elbows instead of dropping the reins • Riding the horse forward into the contact • Using shoulder-fore to connect the inside hind to the outside rein • Helping the horse find and hold the “sweet spot” in the bridle without fussing with the hands True connection happens from back to front, and when the horse learns to trust the contact, the frame becomes quiet, steady, and elastic. If you’ve ever struggled with your horse dropping behind the bit, popping their head up, or only holding the frame when you micromanage your hands, this lesson will help you understand how to create a more stable connection.
