UC Berkeley Classics Sather Lecture, February 27, 2021. In this second of four Sather Lectures during the Spring 2021 semester, Dr. Mary Beard presents “Imperial Transgressions: Satire and Subversion in the Life of Elagabalus.” Mary Beard, our 95th Sather Professor of Classics, a Professor of Classics at Cambridge, and a Fellow of Newnham College, focuses on the emperor Elagabalus and presents him in the light of the conundrum he posed for ancient and modern historians alike. She questions ancient and modern notions of autocracy and transgression and she delights us, as always, with her all-encompassing approach to Roman historical studies. This event was organized by UC Berkeley Classics Department as part of the Sather Lecture series and was presented by the College of Letters & Science, Division of Arts & Humanities as part of the Arts & Ideas Live Online! series.
