Victory to you oh Surya, The lamp of the seven worlds, The one who’s rays destroy all sorrow and pain, The one who is lead to by the path of the Vedas, The every growing source of heat and sustenance. The absolute cause of life and death. The form and the formless. The ultimate source of energy and light. The most prominent feature, whether in the Indian mythology or its Greek counterpart, is the image of the Sun riding on a chariot with 7 horses and his charioteer Aruna. The idea that he travels everyday from east to west throwing light and giving life to the universe has been narrated and celebrated through a variety of scripture and languages. The Navagraha stotram describes him as a descendant of Kashyapa, destroyer of all sins, the one who shines like the Japaa flower. In poet Bharathi’s words, the sun exposes everything, rises and dips, is the flame of knowledge and the creator and destroyer of all life forms. In this piece, the dancing body is the medium to express and recreate this idea of Surya, his vitality and strength.
