“Tiny hearts” offer new understanding and potential treatments for heart disease

A collaboration between QIMR Berghofer ‪@QIMRB_Institute‬, Murdoch Children's Research Institute - MCRI ‪@MurdochChildrens‬, and The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne ‪@RCHMelb‬is bringing us closer to understanding and treating devastating heart diseases affecting children and adults. The Cardiac Bioengineering Lab’s cardiac organoids ("tiny hearts") mimic adult human heart muscle and are key to the breakthrough. Using human pluripotent stem cells, a research team led by Professor James Hudson overcame the challenge of the cardiac organoids being ‘too young’, by activating two key biological pathways to mature these cells.
