The United States was building the largest navy the world had ever seen. American shipyards were launching powerful Essex-class aircraft carrier fleet carriers at an astonishing pace while dozens of escort carriers were being constructed to protect convoys across the Atlantic. At the same time, hundreds of Fletcher-class destroyer warships and powerful Iowa-class battleship vessels were entering service. The scale of production was staggering. American shipyards were building warships, submarines, and support vessels faster than any nation in history. But when Adolf Hitler read the report, he dismissed its significance.
