Salzburg Festival, 1988 La Cenerentola is one of those Rossini operas that cannot be confined to a single stylistic category. It is an opera buffa with tragic overtones, a comedy with magical nuances, and a parable in which one character, Alidoro, pulls all the strings. The fairy tale goes beyond character comedy to become a baroque allegory, culminating in a finale that affirms Ferretti's subtitle La bontà in trionfo — "the triumph of goodness."In this version, the magical elements found in the original story were removed from the libretto to simplify staging. The evil stepmother is replaced by a stepfather named Don Magnifico, and instead of a Fairy Godmother, a philosopher, Alidoro, is the one who assists Cinderella.
