KZN CoGTA MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi admitted last week that R27million sponsorship of the Royal AM soccer team by the Msunduzi Municipality in Pietermaritzburg may have been unreasonable. This was a response to parliamentary questions asked by the DA to the KZN CoGTA MEC. The DA has filed papers to reverse the deal, citing the state of Msunduzi's financial struggles. In May, the municipality owed R400 million to Eskom for electricity, and approached the national government for a bailout. By August 2023, the municipality had between 27 and 30 days cash-on-hand availability, falling to meet the National Treasury's benchmark of at least 90 days available cash. Despite this, the municipality said it intends to go ahead with a R27 million sponsorship of Royal AM. The office of the mayor said he is unable to comment on Morning Live due to the DA's court application. We are also attempting to reach out to Royal AM. DA Member of Provincial Legislature in KZN Dean Macpherson, who is also the party's provincial chair and Shadow Minister for Trade, joins us to discuss this.
