The Importance of Technology in Construction The goal of a construction project and as a construction project engineer is to build the project as efficiently and cost effective as possible. Technology, when implemented correctly, helps us as contractors build more accurately, quickly, and efficiently. There is a great push to adopt more technology in the industry as we have seen very little growth in the construction industry in terms of worker efficiency when compared to industries like manufacturing. There is some useless construction technology out there, however, so you need to do your due diligence on each "best new thing" out there and make sure it makes sense for your company. Construction Drawings This isn't really super new technology, but I think it's interesting to go over. Personally I prefer physical paper drawings, but now you can have entire drawing sets just on your iPad. Digital drawings have helped us get answers and construction details quickly and easier to read. However, my issue with this is that the convenience of the technology has made us lazier and not as thorough in the creation of drawing sets. Details are just copy pasted from previous projects and may not be applicable. So it's definitely beneficial to have these digital drawings, but keep in mind the quality may not necessarily be there. Construction Modeling and Coordination 3D modeling is huge for construction coordination. To build the project in the model, prior to work in the field, makes everyone much more efficient. The planning involved is so worth it to avoid headaches in the field. The more you can do ahead of time, the better. Modeling and coordination can be done through programs like Navisworks, 3D modeling can also be done in Revit and possible 3D CAD (haven't used this). Companies also prefabricate materials off of modeling as well so it just all around is such an important part of the construction process. Construction Equipment Nowadays equipment is trying to make strides in the industry. Self climbing formwork, drones, 4D scanners, and autonomous/remote controlled vehicles and equipment help give us more information and efficiencies that we haven't had before. Again, there can be some gimmicky things out there, but there are so many other options out there that really improve productivity. They will likely come at a cost, but over time you'll save on labor and that's the name of the game. Augmented Reality (AR) I haven't seen this yet in construction, but I see the potential here. A lot of people, especially owners, since they aren't looking at drawings constantly, it can be hard for them to envision the 2D drawings into real life. AR can be such a great communication tool to show construction issues or progress and explain how things will get done. Robots Though I think there will always need to be a human element to a construction project, you can't deny that there are some human error inefficiencies out there. Having robots should minimize mistakes made by human judgements, emotions and hopefully can lift, a move better than a human leading to more production.
