The last rites of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh would be performed with full state honours at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat crematorium at 11:45 am on Saturday. As per the notification released by the union home ministry, a state funeral will be accorded to the former PM, who breathed his last at AIIMS at the age of 92 on Thursday. “It has been decided by the Government that State funeral will be accorded to Dr. Manmohan Singh. The funeral will take place at 11:45 AM on 28h December, 2024 at Nigambodh Ghat, New Delhi," the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in the notification. In a separate notification, defence ministry said that top leaders including the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Lok Sabha Speaker, Defence Minister, Cabinet Secretary, and others would lay wreath at the crematorium. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and top BJP leaders reached Dr Singh’s residence to pay their last respects to the “visionary leader” and architect of India’s economic reforms. Congress MPs Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi also arrived there to pay tributes. The Centre has announced a seven-day national mourning in honour of Dr Manmohan Singh ahead of a Cabinet meeting scheduled today at 11 am. Condolences poured in from all ends of the spectrum. President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed condolences on the passing away of former PM Manmohan Singh. PM Modi condoled the demise and said that the former PM rose from humble origins and made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives. Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed condolences and recalled the former PM’s contribution to the nation. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi also paid tributes to Dr Singh, stating that he “lost a mentor and guide”.
