Caricature Tip: Finding The Mass

In this video, caricature artist A.J. Jensen, gives a brief lesson on how to go about exaggerating the head shape for a caricature. This tip is known as, Finding The Mass. To do this you have to consider if your subject, that you want to caricature, has more top or bottom mass. With this idea, you can think of the head as a balloon. Visualizing the head this way can help you squish air to either the top or bottom part of the balloon. You can match this with your subject. This will give you a better idea on how you can exaggerate your head shape. He uses a Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen for the inks. Also he uses Prismacolor Colored Pencils for the line work as well. The colors were Process Red, Black Raspberry, and Parma Violet. For Coloring he used Copic Sketch Markers and Prismacolor Artstix.
