SOUNDBITE (English) Eamon Ryan, Ireland Environment Minister: "We've got 190+ countries (that need) to agree, that's not easy. But if we can unite on commitment to address the source of the problem, which has been fossil fuels, this will make it a historic day." 8. Various of protesters outside the Plenary hall holding signs reading (English) "Hold the line" and "End fossil fuels" STORYLINE: United Nations climate negotiators said on Wednesday that reaching a climate pact has included "extremely complex negotiations". Ministers from all over the world directed the world on Wednesday to transition away from planet-warming fossil fuels in a move the talks chief called historic, despite critics worries about loopholes. "We have to remember that for many countries, what we're basically saying is the way you make your living now, you need to change the way you get your income," said Dan Jorgensen, Danish climate minister about future challenges. Intensive sessions with all sorts of delegates went well into the small hours of Wednesday morning after the conference presidency's initial document angered many countries by avoiding decisive calls for action on curbing warming. Then, the United Arab Emirates-led presidency presented delegates from nearly 200 nations a new central document — called the global stocktake — just after sunrise. The deal doesn’t go so far as to seek a “phase-out” of fossil fuels, which more than 100 nations had pleaded for. Instead, it calls for “transitioning away" from fossil fuels. That transition would be in a way that gets the world to net zero greenhouse gas emissions in 2050 and follows the dictates of climate science.
