He was born in Kearny, New Jersey, and began playing guitar at a young age. He started his professional music career in the 1940s as a session musician in New York City, playing guitar on recordings for artists such as Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, and Rosemary Clooney. Mottola also had a successful solo career, recording many albums of his own and performing on television and radio programs. His music often featured a blend of jazz, pop, and easy listening styles, and he was known for his virtuosic guitar playing and his ability to make any song sound beautiful. In addition to his solo work, Mottola was also a member of several musical groups throughout his career. He was a member of the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini, and he also played in the bands of Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, and Percy Faith. Mottola was a highly respected musician in the industry, and he received many awards and accolades for his work.
