Tonle Sap Lake, located south of Siem Reap in north-west Cambodia, is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and a vital part of the Mekong River system. Its most distinctive feature is its seasonal expansion and contraction: during the monsoon, water from the Mekong flows back into the lake, increasing its size several times over and creating vast floodplains and flooded forests. This natural cycle supports high biodiversity and makes the lake one of the world’s most productive inland fisheries, providing food and livelihoods for millions of Cambodians. The lake is also home to distinctive floating and stilted communities whose lifestyles are closely adapted to the changing water levels. Homes, schools, and shops are built on tall stilts or floating platforms, allowing residents to adjust to seasonal flooding. For students, Tonle Sap offers an important case study in human–environment interaction, sustainable resource use, and the challenges of balancing economic needs with environmental conservation in a fragile ecosystem. Edventure Travel can include a visit to Tonle Sap Lake and its surrounding remote communities as part of a broader Siem Reap tour programme.
