Dry skin of the foot is very common, referred to as xerosis, especially for women as they age due to lowering estrogen levels. However, dry skin of the foot that doesn't resolve with the application of lotion or cream needs to be evaluated by a Podiatrist. Often, the dry foot skin is actually a fungal infection (tinea pedis, more commonly referred to as Athlete's Foot fungus. It is contagious and can spread, in some rare cases leading to cellulitis (a serious infection that usually requires antibiotics orally or IV), so it needs to be evaluated by a Podiatrist. Often, in cases of toenail fungus (onychomycosis), which affects million of people, there is also an Athlete's Foot fungus infection. As both conditions are contagious, fungal infections, we find, quite often, that it is the same fungus in the skin of the foot as it is in the toenails. Usually, an anti-fungal cream or gel is effective in treating Athlete's Foot fungus. There are oral anti-fungals available, but they are typically not necessary for treating Athlete's Foot fungus. The oral anti-fungals can be beneficial for addressing toenail fungus, but may have potential side effects upon the liver and kidneys, and may possibly lower one's white blood cell count.
