You mentioned that you have a 6 week old baby who's been fussing a lot and sleeping a lot, and you're wondering if these are signs of growth spurts. And growth spurts are common at 4 to 6 weeks, and again at 3 months, 4 months, 6, 9, and 12. They frequently happen during the first year of life as your baby is growing and developing rapidly. And the most common symptoms are wanting to eat more and being a little more fussy. And this pattern of behavior might continue for 3 to 5 days, and then your baby's routine usually goes back to normal. As far as the sleep issue goes though, these babies who are going through growth spurts usually sleep less because they are fussier and up wanting to eat more at night. And so at 6 weeks of life most babies are sleeping 16 to 18 hours total out of each 24 hour period, and if your baby is sleeping this much, then that's probably appropriate. But if there's a huge change from what you were seeing before, your baby is difficult to arouse, or you're concerned, I do recommend bringing it up with your pediatrician, because they're the only ones who can determine if it's normal behavior or if it's not. They'll ask you more specific questions and perform an exam and decide if further investigation or treatments are necessary. Good luck with everything, and if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at / intermountainmoms , and recommend us to your friends and family too.
