After dropping two of its last three games, Penn State entered the final regular season game of 1998 with a 7-3 record, hosting a 6-5 Michigan State team. The Nittany Lions played with a chip on their shoulders to dominate early, and essentially end the game by halftime. After the Spartans first drive, the Penn State defense completely shut down their offense which featured Plaxico Burress and Sedrick Irvin. The Blue and White would earn a bowl bid to the Outback Bowl with the win (8-3 record), while Michigan State finished 1998 with a 6-6 record and no bowl game.
