Arthur Nebe was a German SS-Gruppenführer and head of the Criminal Police (Kripo) who played a dual role as both a perpetrator and a conspirator within the Nazi regime. As the commander of Einsatzgruppe B on the Eastern Front, he was directly responsible for the systematic mass murder of over 45,000 people, primarily Jews, and personally experimented with killing methods using explosives and poison gas. Despite his deep involvement in these atrocities, Nebe secretly joined the resistance and was involved in the 20 July 1944 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. After the plot's failure, Nebe was hunted by the Gestapo, tried for treason by the People's Court, and sentenced to death. On March 2, 1945, he was executed by hanging in Plötzensee Prison, marking the paradoxical end of a key Holocaust perpetrator killed by the very regime he had served.
