Remembering Kevin, Our Backpacking Buddy

A couple decades ago, Kevin came into our lives as the scout master for our Boy Scout Troop. Members of the troop, including Kevin and many others, starting backpacking together around our state and on the Appalachian Trail (AT). We've completed more than 500 miles of the AT in week long sections every summer. It would be impossible to count that hiking miles and camping nights that we have done together. Last summer, Kevin couldn't hike on the AT with the group because he fortunately had used up his vacation hiking with his family in the Pacific Northwest. My last contact with Kevin was during that vacation when he reached to me to check on my developing health problems. He passed away just weeks later. He will be missed by his family, of course. Missing him also are the hundreds of scouts and their families who passed through the troop and are better people today because of Kevin's guidance and influence.
