Australian Violence Against Women Alliance's Dr Merrindahl Andrew says today's meeting between federal and state women's ministers needs to work to urgently reform the legal system to better protect victims. "At present, unfortunately the way the system's working, it's forcing children into the care of violent parents," Dr Andrew said. "There needs to be presumption a child's safety comes first, not the assumption care will be shared equally with each parent," she said. Ahead of the meeting, more than 75 groups have signed a letter to call for the government to implement five urgent actions to improve safety for vulnerable women and children. Dr Andrew noted the current AVO system was failing at protecting women and children, calling for the implementation of "national improvement in the standards of AVO enforcement".
