Effective Use of Automatic Identification System AIS | The Nautical Institute

The video explains the Automatic Identification System (AIS), which uses VHF radio waves to broadcast critical information among ships and shore bases to enhance safety, aid traffic management, facilitate search and rescue operations, and gather industry data for improvement purposes. However, there is a concerning trend where sailors rely too heavily on AIS informations in navigation, which can lead to accidents. However, International Maritime Organization (IMO) Resolution A.1106 recommends that mariners not rely solely on AIS but use it as part of various navigational tools. AIS, ECDIS, and radar comprehensively understand a vessel's journey and nearby ships. However, relying solely on AIS is not recommended. Its limitations include equipment malfunctions, misuse, limited range, cyber threats, heavy traffic, and message overload. Vigilance is required to use AIS effectively. Crew members must maintain traditional lookouts and merge AIS inputs with other navigational aids like radar/ECDIS. They must also be adept at interpreting AIS outputs. Key Points Discussed: Understanding AIS: Its role in enhancing safety, traffic management, search and rescue operations, and data collection for industry improvements is essential. Integration with Navigation Systems: The benefits of interfacing AIS with Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) and radar are explored from an officer's perspective on watch. Warning Against Complacency: Officers are cautioned against exclusive reliance on AIS information despite its advantages. In my opinion, Resolution 1106 is a reference for correct usage guidelines. Case Study Analysis: An examination of an accident involving a small container vessel that collided with a fishing boat due to overreliance on AIS data highlights potential consequences. Limitations & Challenges of AIS: Issues such as equipment faults, misuse or intentional deactivation of AIS systems by operators; range limitations; cyber vulnerabilities; jamming/spoofing threats; message slot overload; lack of warnings about marine life presence. Best Practices for Using AIS Effectively: Never rely solely on AIS for navigation or collision avoidance. Maintain vigilance through all available means, including visual lookout. Ensure compliance with international regulations regarding vessel equipment. Correct configuration and mindful use of privacy settings within the system. Combine data from additional navigational instruments like radar along with ECDIS. Understand broadcast intervals and ensure crew training in operation/interpretation. This video acknowledges the critical role played by the Automatic Identification System since its universal introduction in 2004 for safe navigation globally; it is essential not to succumb to overdependence but instead maintain comprehensive situational awareness using all tools at one's disposal. This video is applicable to mariners on all size of vessels, from leisure, fishing, commercial, naval and for all those ashore with an interest in the safety of maritime navigation. The OCEAN Project concluded on 30 September 2025, marking the end of three years of research and innovation supported by the European Union and UK Research and Innovation. Its legacy continues through the publicly available resources, training materials, and tools designed to make navigation safer for all.
