Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra / Eiji Arai (solo-violin) Friedrich Haider WORLD PREMIERE PERFORMANCE of the 1st version's conclusion starting at 37:58 Just a few years after „Ein Heldenleben“ had been performed for the first time (March 3, 1899) Strauss replaced it's conclusion ("The Hero's Retirement from this World and Completion“) by a harmonically more sophisticated music and a sort of "majestic fanfare" at it's end, quoting the "main hero's theme". The reason for this change was the objection of a friend, if it was really good to always end his Tone Poems "silently" (like in Don Juan, Zarathustra, Don Quixote). In fact, a quite unartistic consideration! Amazingly, Richard Strauss did change the ending, but many years later, when listening to a performance of the work in Zurich, ironically called it a "State Funeral". Suggested by the "Richard Strauss Institut" in Munich and thanks to the composers grandsons we were given access to the original handwriting of the unpublished 1st version, being enabled to write down the orchestral parts and to world premiere the original "silent conclusion" in this Tokyo Philharmonic Subscription Concert - starting at 37:58 in the performance. Timecodes: 00:00 Der Held (The Hero) 03:52 Des Helden Widersacher (The Hero's Adversaries) 06:43 Des Helden Gefährtin (The Hero's Companion) 20:16 Des Helden Walstatt (The Hero at Battle) 27:13 Des Helden Friedenswerke (The Hero's Works of Peace) 31:15 Des Helden Weltflucht und Vollendung (The Hero's Retirement from this World and Completion) 37:58 (conclusion of the Tone Poem's first version - "world premiere performance")
